How You Can Start Living in the Moment

There are many things that you can do throughout the day to start living in the moment, create a mindfulness cue,  do a 5 minute meditation, a random act of kindness coming from the heart.

It’s impossible to really enjoy life without being fully aware of the present moment.  In reality, life can only be lived in the present.  But most often our minds are preoccupied with multiple things, none of which is occurring right now.

Our minds are very active and constantly attempting to break free to occupy themselves with the past, the future, and pure fantasy. While it’s good to prepare for the future and learn from the past, focusing primarily on the present has many benefits.

Try To Avoid Worrying

Worrying can only happen when you look to the future.  Keep your thoughts on your environment and your current activity.  You can’t worry if you leave the future alone. Instead, focus on the happy moments of your life. Practice being grateful, this helps to bring you into the present moment because you are consciously thinking about the things you should feel grateful for and how and why this has brought you to where you are now.

Watch Your Breathing 

No matter what the situation, take a moment for a deep, conscious breath, this will bring you back into the moment.  Take a few deep breaths and  calm yourself before taking action

Avoiding regret

Regret arrives while thinking about the past.  The past is over and no longer exists.  You bring your past mistakes to life by thinking about them.  Let them go.  Stop comparing now to then. Look for any small things that you can do to demonstrate kindness to others right now.

Turn off your electronic devices

Cell phones, computers, iPods, and gaming systems distract from the present moment.  Find your enjoyment in your life rather than in an imaginary world or in frivolous communication.

Stop Multitasking

Try doing one task at a time.  Current research is overwhelmingly in favor of single-tasking.  You’ll find you perform the task faster and at a higher level.  Let multitasking be a thing of the past.  Single-tasking is much more conducive to living in the present.

Eliminate Unnecessary Possessions

Having too many possessions is more of a burden than an advantage.  Owning too many things results in disorder that clutters both your physical environment and your mind.  If you don’t need it, or haven’t used it in quite a while, consider giving it away or selling it.

Forgiveness

When you hold a grudge and carry anger, the only one suffering is you!  Anger is distracting and keeps you from enjoying the current moment. If you find that you are not mindful in the present because you feel unhappy, make yourself smile and find something to laugh about.

Slow Down

Move slowly and deliberately.  Rushing creates a unique type of anxiety.  Give yourself the time you need to enjoy the current activity.  Address one task at a time and give it your full attention.

One way that you can become more present is to change up your routines.

“If you worry about what might be, and wonder what might have been, you will ignore what is.”

Listen

If someone is speaking to you, give them your full attention and participate in the conversation to the best of your ability.

Spend 5 minutes of each hour describing your environment.  Take this time and describe to yourself everything you see, hear, smell, and feel.  It’s an easy way to bring your mind back to the present moment and keep it there.  There’s no way to compete the exercise without being mindful.

Eat slowly and enjoy your food

By eating slower, you’ll have the chance to enjoy your food more.  You’ll also eat less, which is a good thing for many of us.  Try eating an entire orange one piece at a time.  Go slowly and focus on the flavor of each section.

Watch Your Schedule

Busy, busy,busy. Too many obligations results in a crowded schedule and time concerns.  It’s not easy to stay focused on the current task if you’re worried about being on time for the next one.  Leave some time between your scheduled obligations.

Avoid missing out on your life in the present by losing so much thought and time to the past and the future.

Make living in the moment become a habit and a evolve into a skill.  Indulging in worry and regret are also habits, bad habits.  It is important that you don’t get upset at yourself if you find your mind wandering.  Accept that right now, it is normal for your mind to wander about.  Accept that your mind  took mind took a little detour and return your focus to the present.

Even if it’s not possible for you to completely start living in the moment, your  life can more enjoyable, relaxed, and meaningful when your begin to focus on the present as often as possible.

Living in the moment is not always easy, but the rewards are that you will evolve spiritually, mentally and physically, as a human being.
