7 Steps to Personal Growth
Personal growth will make your life more enjoyable and fulfilling. But where do you begin?
The key to starting a personal growth journey is in determining what your priorities are.
It is important to make your efforts work for you as effectively as possible:
- Take stock of your current situation. Think about a normal day in your life. Then consider what you do on the weekend. Write down what comes to your mind. Most likely this is a list that will be added to, so just note what comes to the top of your mind firstHere are a few suggestions:
- Getting up for work: I hate getting up this early and I can’t stand my job.
- In the shower: thinking about paying my bills and still have fun this weekend. I don’t like my body, I need to exercise.
- Driving to work: I hate the traffic, I do like my car.
- At work: Can’t stand..(fill in the blank), I’m smarter than this job.
- Night at home: Watch boring TV. Play video games for hours because I don’t have anything else to do. Forgot to pick up food for the pet.

- Rate your experiences. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being excellent, rate each observation. It’s the low-rated parts of your life that are dragging you down. Now you have a better picture of what areas you need to focus on on for your personal growth, if your interested.
- Visualize. Let’s suppose you look in the mirror and can see your weight is an issue. You rate it a “1”, because it negatively impacts your confidence and self-esteem. It’s also a health issue. You also believe that it hurts your social life. What do you see as a better alternative? Visualize a better body.
- Your on the bathroom scale, and see your ideal weight. You look and feel good in your clothes. Your not out of breath simply walking up a few stairs.
- Now address this challenge. You have a purpose. Put your visualization into action. Create a plan of action. See it. Feel it. Believe it. DO IT!
- Consider the people in your life. If you want to improve any part of your life, there will always be people that will attempt to hold you back. Some may not do it intentionally, but it will happen. It’s hard to kick your parents out of your life, but many other people are optional.
- You may need to add new people into your life. Perhaps you need a personal trainer. Meet others that have successfully lost weight, or need a ‘body buddy’ for encouragement. Have a hobby you like or would like to learn? It’s always easier to make new friends with like-minded people.
- What is it you need? A cookbook with healthy recipes? A gym membership? Home exercise equipment? Try not to go into debt, see if you have resources at hand. You may become inspired with the options you have right in front of you.
- Focus on your habits. Your current situation is result of years of bad habits. What is it you want to change? Now begin to Make small changes to your daily habits. Better habits provide better outcomes. Be patient. If you stumble, get right back up.
- Learn how to deal with being uncomfortable. The faster you wish to change, the more discomforts you may face. You’ll have to slow down or accept that discomfort is part of the deal. The ability to deal with uncomfortable feelings grows with practice.

It can feel a bit stressful when you desire to change your life, so many people don’t even try, or give it a half-hearted attempt.
Focus on what you feel are the most negative parts of your life first.
You can then turn your attention to the less-critical items.
Beginning a personal growth journey is an exciting time.
